Phyllis Schlafly was elected to be the 1st alternate delegate to the National Convention from Missouri's 1st Congressional District. In 1984 with Reagan in office and about to be re-elected in a landslide, pro-life Delegates increased in numbers commensurate with the growth of the Republican Party nationwide; Phyllis Schlafly played a role in strengthening pro-life plank say: "The unborn child has a fundamental individual right to life which cannot be infringed. We therefore reaffirm our support for a human life amendment to the Constitution, and we endorse legislation to make clear that the Fourteenth Amendment’s protections apply to unborn children.
